Kathleen Turner’s Biography
Her father was a career diplomat, so she traveled around the world including Canada, Cuba, Venezuela and the United Kingdom. At age 14, studying at the American Academy in London, she began her first contacts with the theater. In 1972, after the death of her father from a heart attack, she returned with her entire family to her hometown, where she entered the University of Missouri State (formerly Southwest Missouri State). There she did a theater degree, but she never went to a drama school.
She later moved to the University of Maryland (Baltimore) where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. That same year she settled in New York with the intention of becoming an actress. After working the first few months as a waitress, she landed a job on a television series, which she paired with a role in the Broadway play, Gemini.
Its premiere in the cinema was with William Hurt in 1981 with the film Body Heat (Fire in the body), directed by Lawrence Kasdan. After this film she received several job offers, but she rejected them all because she was afraid to classify herself as an erotic film actress, returning to New York where she worked again as a waitress in a pub.
Two years later she returned to the big screen with Carl Reiner’s The Man With Two Brains, in which she shared the spotlight with Steve Martin. From this movie, Kathleen Turner’s career was starring, and in 1984 she worked with Anthony Perkins in the daring film The Passion of China Blue and in the adventure film Romancing the Stone with Michael Douglas and with director Robert Zemeckis.
In 1985 she returned to work with Michael Douglas in The Jewel of the Nile, directed by Lewis Teague. That same year with Jack Nicholson she starred in The Honor of the Prizzi, one of John Huston’s greatest hits. In 1986 she starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s Peggy Sue Got Married for which she was nominated the following year for the Oscar as Best Leading Actress.
In 1986 she married rocker and tycoon Jay Weiss and the next year her only daughter Rachel would be born. This same year of 1987 she worked with Sting and Gabriel Byrne in the film by Peter del Monte, Julia and Julia. The following year she starred in The Accidental Tourist with William Hurt.
In 1990 she was very successful in a new version of the play The Cat on the Roof of Zinc, and in 1992 she was commissioned along with Karl Malden to announce the candidates for the Oscars that same year.
Already in those years she experienced health problems (rheumatoid arthritis), which added to the consumption of the necessary medication caused a notorious increase in weight bordering on obesity. The deterioration of her youthful and slender image may explain the decline in her activity in the cinema, although she participated in the famous TV series Friends, playing a male role (Chandler Bing’s father) and recently in Californication, where she plays an agent of representation.
In 2014 she returns to the big screen, this time with the comedy starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, Dumb and Dumber To, in the role of “Fraida Felcher”.
