Fletcher Knebel’s Biography

Knebel was born in Dayton, Ohio, but changed residence several times during her youth. She graduated from the institute in Yonkers, New York, studied for a year at the University of Paris and graduated from the University of Miami in Oxford, Ohio in 1934. After graduating, she accepted a job offer from the Coatesville Record newspaper in Coatesville , Pennsylvania. For the next twenty years she worked for different newspapers, and finally was hired as a political columnist for the journal group Cowles Publications. Between 1951 and 1964, she satirized the political situation and the government of the United States in a national broadcast column entitled “Potomac Fever”.

In 1960 she wrote a chapter on John F. Kennedy for the book “Candidates” (Candidates). This work started her passion for writing longer books. In the following years she published fifteen books, most of them fiction, and all with political background.

Seven days of May

Her best-known novel is “Seven Days in May” (co-written in 1962 with Charles W. Bailey), about an attempted military coup in the United States. Knebel said the plot came after interviewing the former head of the United States Air Force, General Curtis LeMay, who had accused President John F. Kennedy of cowardice for her handling of the crisis unleashed by the Bay Invasion. of Pigs The book was a great success, remaining at number one on the New York Times bestseller list for almost a year. It also gave rise in 1964 to a successful film, also titled Seven Days of May.

Knebel was married four times between 1935 and 1985. She committed suicide in 1993 taking an overdose of sleeping pills at her home in Honolulu, Hawaii, after a long fight against cancer. She is the author of the following ironic phrase, mimicking similar phrases about the relationship between tobacco and cancer:
